Chairs are an incredibly interesting part of antique furniture in as much as there is an enormous variety over a long period of time. After the bench and the trestle table, chairs were one of the first forms of furniture invented. There is a throne chair in Tutankhamen’s tomb made from timber that on first inspection looks like it was made in the eighteenth century rather than two thousand years beforehand. In modern times, chairs really came into vogue amongst the upper classes (nobility and the gentry), around the end of the sixteenth century; although, there is not much commonly available these days before the eighteenth century. It seems to me, that chairs are a great passion of all antique dealers, and for that matter collectors, because a good chair embodies both great design and great craftsmanship. In this respect, we have some four to five hundred individual chairs, ranging from dining chairs to library, occasional and lounge chairs, from upmarket European to Colonial Australian, and from the past three centuries. |
