The term ‘bedside table’ is a twentieth century term and although small tables of one sort or another have been conveniently used beside the bed from time and memorial, what are commonly seen as bedside tables came into play about the middle of the nineteenth century. However, they did not form a common practice until about the 1920s/1930s. Bedside cabinets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were known as pot cabinets and only commonly available amongst the gentry and upper classes. Because of their function and for one reason or another, most did not survive! They are very rarely available in pairs. Nineteenth and twentieth century French pairs are more commonly available and employ a fair degree of marble and are generally quite delightful pieces of furniture in both the Louis XV and Louis XVI style. Thus, the variety available is much exceeded by the demand. We try to maintain a good supply where possible. |
